What does the Barbie movie and Jesus have in common?

The Barbie movie has been such a cultural phenomenon in 2023. It has taken in over 1 billion dollars and is now a top 20 film in earnings of all time knocking out Elsa’s Frozen.

This movie with plastic dolls, Kens in cowboy hats and Barbies in pink outfits is very different from the world of Jesus 2000 years ago.

Yet what made the Barbie movie so successful is probably due to three things it has in common with Jesus.

1. Both care about the communities big questions

The Barbie movie explored questions such as ‘Who am I?’ and ‘What is my purpose?’ in the movie.

The Barbie movie explored questions such as ‘Who am I?’ and ‘What is my purpose?’ in the movie.

2. Both cultivate curiosity with clever 'what if' scenarios

The Barbie movie used Barbie dolls to create a ‘what if’ story about identity and meaning.
Jesus used siblings in the Prodigal Son to create a ‘what if’ scenario about finding God’s acceptance.

3. Both conclude with compelling answers

*(spoiler)* The Barbie movie inspires the audience to find their purpose by not living up to others expectations just as Barbie discovered for herself.

Jesus brings hope to his audience in the Prodigal Son by showing that God accepts people unconditionally no matter what they’ve done

These three commonalities show us that we are fundamentally wired to learn the best and care the most about scenarios that compel both our minds and our emotions.

Jesus’ modelling of storytelling and Hollywood’s successful adoption of his style (albeit unintentional), gives me confidence that our program at ‘More to the Story’, which applies this same style, is the proven way to explore Christianity with teens.

Our programs goal is to show teens how Christianity can satisfy their hearts deepest desires.

It is a FREE 8 lesson program full of videos, lesson plans and student worksheets.

Why not give the proven teaching styles modelled by Jesus, adopted by Hollywood and applied at ‘More to the Story’ a go?
